Biodiversity collage workshop

Biodiversity issues refer to the challenges and problems faced by various animal and plant species, as well as the ecosystems in which they live. Here are some major issues related to biodiversity:

Habitat Loss: The conversion of land for agriculture, urbanization, and other human activities leads to the destruction and fragmentation of natural habitats. This limits the space available for species, deprives them of essential resources, and puts them at risk.

Invasive Species: The introduction of invasive exotic species into ecosystems can disrupt the existing ecological balance. These species can reproduce rapidly, dominate resources, and compete with native species, often leading to their decline or even extinction.

Overexploitation of Resources: Overfishing, unsustainable deforestation, excessive mining, and other practices of overconsumption of natural resources can deplete populations of species and lead to their disappearance. It can also destabilize ecosystems in which these species play a crucial role.

Climate Change: Climate change directly impacts biodiversity. It alters habitats, changes species migration patterns, affects reproductive cycles, and increases the risk of extinction for many species, especially those closely dependent on specific ecosystems.

Pollution: Air, water, and soil pollution have detrimental effects on biodiversity. Chemical pollutants and toxic waste can contaminate ecosystems and species, causing health disorders, genetic mutations, and a decrease in fertility.

Biodiversity loss is a cause for concern because it affects not only natural ecosystems but also human society. Biodiversity plays a crucial role in providing ecosystem services such as crop pollination, water purification, and climate regulation. The conservation and protection of biodiversity are therefore essential to ensure the sustainability of ecosystems and the well-being of all forms of life, including humanity.

A workshop like a "biodiversity mural" is a participatory activity designed to raise awareness and educate participants about the richness and importance of biodiversity. This creative and interactive workshop allows participants to discover and explore various aspects of biodiversity while collaborating to create a collective artwork representing the challenges of species and ecosystem diversity.

Biodiversity Collage workshop

The concept:

Participants create their mural by arranging 39 cards containing scientific information from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) report (equivalent to the IPCC for climate) to understand the complexity of biodiversity, the various services it provides, and the five major pressures it faces today.

Each group decorates their mural and gives it a unique title.

A debriefing session follows to address emotions, discuss solutions, and encourage participants to take action.

This "Biodiversity Mural" workshop offers a participatory and creative experience that promotes awareness of biodiversity and encourages participants to reflect on their role in its preservation. It can be adapted based on the age and interests of the participants and can be organized as part of a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy to raise awareness among your employees, within the framework of a seminar, or as a team-building event!
